Michinoku Kashima Baseball field
The 20m high tsunami washed away all 70 houses in the Minami-Migita district and killed 54 people. Following the tsunami, most of the district was designated as a 'disaster risk zone' where no houses could be built, and the district was dissolved. The baseball field had been the district’s evacuation area, so many gathered on the field. However, the unexpectedly large tsunami and debris created a huge whirlpool on the ground, and 10 people lost their lives. Although there were calls for demolition, many expressed their wish for its restoration, and the field was restored in May 2015. At the opening ceremony, a match between the Tohoku Rakuten Eagles and the Chiba Lotte Marines was held. The sound of the ball echoing around the field became a symbol of the reconstruction.
