Former Isoyama St. John's Church, Prayer Garden

Isoyama St. John's Church was built in the Taisho era. It was located on top of a small mountain, so when the earthquake struck, the town’s people ran up to the church ground. The surrounding area was so badly damaged that the mountain became an isolated island on land. About 20 people spent the night in this church. Later, the dilapidated church was demolished but a 'prayer garden' was established on the site. The foundation stones laid out on the site retain the shape of the original church. As befits the site of a chapel, a requiem bell, a requiem brick and a memorial stone monument have been erected. Below this memorial site, the Pacific Ocean and some traces the lost village can be seen.
